Overview
The Yamunotri Gangotri pilgrimage holds immense spiritual importance for devotees seeking purification and peace.
- Yamunotri Temple is the origin of the sacred Yamuna River and is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, believed to be the daughter of the Sun God.
- Gangotri Temple marks the origin of the holy River Ganga, one of the most sacred rivers in India.
- Devotees believe that completing the Yamunotri Gangotri Yatra helps cleanse sins and leads toward spiritual liberation (moksha).
Because of its spiritual importance, the Yamunotri Gangotri tour package is among the most searched Uttarakhand pilgrimage tours and Char Dham Yatra packages.
The Two Sacred Temples
Yamunotri Temple :
Yamunotri Temple is located at an altitude of around 3,293 meters in the Garhwal Himalayas. Surrounded by snow-clad peaks and lush valleys, it is the source of the Yamuna River.
Pilgrims begin the journey from Janki Chatti, followed by a 5–6 km trek to the temple. Pony, palki, and doli services are available for convenience.
The famous Surya Kund (hot water spring) is a major attraction where devotees prepare prasad.
This sacred destination is a key highlight of the Yamunotri tour package from Delhi, Haridwar, or Rishikesh.
Gangotri Temple :
Gangotri Temple is situated at an altitude of 3,100 meters along the banks of the Bhagirathi River.
The temple is dedicated to Goddess Ganga and is believed to be the place where the river descended to Earth.
Nearby lies Gaumukh Glacier, the actual source of the Ganges and a popular trekking destination.
The Gangotri tour package offers both spiritual fulfillment and breathtaking Himalayan scenery.
Traditional Yatra Route
The traditional sequence for the Yamunotri Gangotri Yatra is:
Haridwar / Rishikesh → Yamunotri → Gangotri
Many pilgrims start their journey from Haridwar or Rishikesh, traveling through scenic hill towns, river valleys, and sacred locations.
This route is one of the most popular Himalayan pilgrimage circuits in Uttarakhand.
Best Time for Yamunotri Gangotri Yatra
The best time for Yamunotri Gangotri Yatra is from April/May to October/November, depending on weather conditions.
During winter, heavy snowfall leads to temple closure, and the idols are shifted to lower altitude temples.
Due to the limited season, it is advisable to book your Yamunotri Gangotri Yatra package in advance.
